Devil’s Game by Joanna Wylde

Joanna Wylde has delivered a scorching hot story with Devil’s game, her third book in the Reaper’s MC series.

Emmy Lou Hayes is Picnic’s daughter, who is the President of the Reaper’s MC. She has grown up around the MC lifestyle and has had to put up with a very overprotective father. She is finally looking to spread her wings and live life. She heads out of town to Portland and things soon become complicated. While she wanted to experience love and dating she didn’t plan on hooking up with someone from another MC, especially the Devil’s Jacks. But once Em finds out who Hunter really is, can she get passed his deception and decide if he is worth fighting for.

Hunter is a member of the Devil’s Jack’s. He is has been making a name for himself over the years and he has risen within the club. For his new job Hunter is tasked with a going after Em because what better way to go after the enemy is by taking the President’s daughter. When Hunter first sees Em he figures this job will be pretty easy. He soon comes to realize that he is in way over his head. He’s not supposed to fall for the enemy…is he?

“Em, I really like you. We covered that. I like you enough not play games, Ok.”

“Well, I’m not her boyfriend. I’m her old man and I’m not gonna let anyone get between us.”

“There are things I don’t like about your club, but they also helped make you who you are. They’re your family, and now my family too. I’m not a civilian and I didn’t fall in love with a stockbroker. I feel in love with a Devil’s Jack.”

Devil’s Game is now my favorite book of the series. Being introduced to Em and Hunter during Reapers Legacy I knew they would be together but I didn’t know how amazing there story would be. Parts of Devil’s Game overlap with Reaper’s Legacy but we now get to see everything from Em’s perspective when she was taken with Sophie. I thought this was a brilliant idea by the author.

Hunter is one super-hunky, badass alpha male. He is tough and has no problem breaking the rules if it helps out his brothers in the Devil’s Jacks. The Devil’s Jacks are the only family he has ever known. He knows that he shouldn’t be attracted to Em because she is the enemy but he is willing to put himself and his reputation and position with the club on the line for her. Couldn’t he get any hotter?

Em has grown up in the MC lifestyle and knows all the good and bad that comes with loving a biker. But loving Hunter goes against all the rules because is he is a member of the Devil’s Jacks. Em is an interesting mix. On one side she is sweet and loyal and the other she is strong and determined. The latter of which wasn’t really seen in the previous books. In Devil’s Game Em really came into her own. Once she finds out whom Hunter really is she is conflicted because of the problems it will cause. But she stands with Hunter and shows that love conquers all.

Devil’s Game is a fabulous addition to the Reaper’s series. I always wonder how an author can top their previous book and Joanna surely did in this one. The book is well written with a lot of action going on. Once I picked up the book I couldn’t put it down. It has fights, jealousy and some super-hot MC men. I can see a whole Devil’s Jacks spin off series! The story also brought a host of new characters that I hope will have books of their own. I can’t wait for the next book in the series! Picnic’s story can’t come soon enough!

From The Author:

Liam “Hunter” Blake hates the Reapers MC. Born and raised a Devil’s Jack, he knows his duty. He’ll defend his club from their oldest enemies—the Reapers—using whatever weapons he can find. But why use force when the Reapers’ president has a daughter who’s alone and vulnerable? Hunter has wanted her from the minute he saw her, and now he has an excuse to take her.

Em has lived her entire life in the shadow of the Reapers. Her overprotective father, Picnic, is the club’s president. The last time she had a boyfriend, Picnic shot him. Now the men in her life are far more interested in keeping her daddy happy than showing her a good time. Then she meets a handsome stranger—a man who isn’t afraid to treat her like a real woman. One who isn’t afraid of her father. His name is Liam, and he’s The One. Or so she thinks.

Hawk by Patricia Rasey

Hawk is the second book in the Sons of Sangue series and I truly enjoyed it. It picks up from where Viper left off and just keeps on rolling with some unbelievable surprises.
Kaleb “Hawk” Tepes is now the president of his MC after his brother Viper stepped down. It’s not smooth sailing for Hawk as president; there is still someone out to get the Sons of Sangue or more specifically Hawk himself! Kaleb tries to focus on the person that is after him and his new responsibilities as President. As things get pretty intense for the Sons of Sangue and he tries to navigate all the trouble rolling in Hawk makes the decision to bring Suzi Stevens deeper into his life, who he has a love/hate relationship with for the past ten years. He soon comes to realizes that this might be the best place for her to be.
Suzi has been in love with Hawk for years and has had to stand on the sidelines watching him from afar while struggling with her feelings for him. When things turn ugly for Hawk and the Sons of Sangue Suzi offers her help. But her help comes with a price; the reveal of secrets that can change the perception of someone close to Hawk. What happens when secrets are revealed and the truth finally comes out?
I loved Hawk from when he was introduced in Viper. He is the quintessential Alpha Male! He is a super-hot vampire that rides a bike. Can it get any better? I always felt that he was a little bit of a hard-ass but in his book he actually shows a softer side of course that only comes out with Suzi but it’s great to see. As he finally comes to realize his feelings for Suzi hasn’t changed in years he is forced to confront old jealousies that he has harbored for years. When Suzi was introduced in Viper I felt she was nothing more than an airhead blood donor. In Hawk Suzi really comes into her own, she is a complex character that finally gets her time to shine. She is extremely loyal and is willing to help Hawk out regardless of how he has treated her in the past and knowing that she might get hurt in the process. Together Hawk and Suzi generate some pretty heavy chemistry.
Hawk is one wild ride! It is well written with a really great story line…Vampires and MC, a great combination. Viper and all the other members of the Sons of Sangue continue to be a huge part of the story and help create a wonderful cast of characters (what made me most happy was finding out what happened to Viper and Cara!). Hawk also deliverers some OMG surprises that are making me crave the next book in the series. If you enjoy paranormal, MC or really any romance with a sexy alpha male and sweet heroine than Hawk is the book.

A Promise of More: The Disgraced Lords Series by Bronwen Evans

A Promise of More is a great addition to The Disgraced Lords Series. This story brings together two people that would not have gotten together except for outstanding circumstances.

Sebastian Hawkestone, Lord Coldhurst is returning to London after a period of exile due to a duel he fought several months before. On the day of his return he is met on his ship by Beatrice Hennessey the sister of the man he killed in the duel.  Beatrice is hoping that Lord Coldhurst will save her family from ruin as he is the one that killed her brother. She believes that the only way to save her family is to have Lord Coldhurst marry her. So she goes to his ship and demands that he marry her. Lord Coldhurst is not thrilled with the idea of a marriage to Beatrice or to anyone really. But he realizes that he can have the marriage he wants (or so he thinks) with her, no complications. As Sebastian and Beatrice struggle through their marriage they come across some evidence that sheds doubt on whether Sebastian actually killed her brother. Sebastian is now more determined than ever to clear his name, but how does he do that while protecting his wife.

Sebastian was a hard character for me to like at times.  There a few instance where he does things that I didn’t agree with. But I can see how it added drama to the story…I just didn’t feel he should have been doing them (I think this is why I love the author so much is she really makes me feel for the characters). I know that he truly didn’t want to marry Beatrice but he soon comes to realize that he has feelings for her and if he doesn’t want his marriage to be anything like the disaster of his parents he knows that they have to behave in a certain way. While he tries to set the tone of his marriage he realizes that nothing goes as planned when you love someone. Beatrice is somewhat naïve to me. She believes that buy marrying Sebastian all her families’ problems would be solved. What she didn’t count on was her feelings for Sebastian turn into something that she wasn’t expecting. I think what she feels for him surprised her and she decides that she wants all or nothing from him. When Sebastian does not want to meet her demands their relationship becomes strained. As Sebastian and Beatrice work on their marriage they also are trying to determine who set up Sebastian and how to clear his name. I believe that by spending time together they realize that they can a marriage that makes them both truly happy.

Overall the story was very well written with well-developed characters that made me pull my hair at times while getting teary-eyed up at others. The story also brings back characters from the first two books in the series and it was nice to catch up with them. If you have read the first two books in the series A Promise of More is definitely worth checking out. I am looking forward to the continuation of this series.

From the Author:

In the second novel in Bronwen Evans’s sexy new Disgraced Lords series, two very independent souls find themselves fighting to resist a deepening passion. When Beatrice Hennessey sets out to confront Lord Coldhurst, the notorious rogue who killed her brother in a duel, her intent is to save her family from destitution. She’s determined to blackmail the man into a loveless marriage. She’ll make the wealthy Lord Coldhurst pay for the rest of his life. But while greeting his ship, Beatrice takes a tumble into the Thames—only to be fished out by a pair of strong masculine arms that tempt her to stay locked in their heated embrace forever. That is, until she realizes those arms belong to Sebastian Hawkestone, Lord Coldhurst himself.

The little drowned mermaid has an interesting proposition indeed; one that Sebastian is surprised to find quite agreeable. Although he’s had women more beautiful, she is pleasing to the eye, and besides, it’s time he fathered an heir. Beatrice promises to be the ideal wife; a woman who hates him with an all-consuming passion is far too sensible to expect romance. However, it isn’t long before Sebastian’s plan for a marriage of convenience unravels, and he’s caught up in the exhilarating undertow of seduction.

The Bossman by Renee Rose

The Bossman is a sweet romance by Renee Rose. Sophie Palazzo is a masseur and one day she is surprised when her client is someone from the “family”. The family being the “mob family” she left behind fifteen years ago. Her father was in it and when he passed Sophie and her mother left. She has no interest in renewing her acquaintance with Joey or his family. Joey La Torre goes to see Sophie because of lingering pain in his knee after an operation. Hoping massage can help with the pain; he is pleasantly surprised when Sophie answers the door. He is quite taken with her. When things go wrong for Sophie he uses his connections to help her out of a jam and what he asks for in return is just one date. On their date Joey and Sophie realize that they have some serious chemistry between them. While Joey is all for starting a relationship, Sophie is a lot more reluctant because of her parents’ marriage. Can the two of them have a relationship; especially with outside forces pushing them apart?

This is my first book by this author and I really enjoyed it. I am always a fan of m stories so I was interested to see how this one would turn out. It is a light mix of m with a sweet romance between the two main characters.

Sophie is a sweet woman. While she knows she is attracted to Joey she doesn’t want to have a relationship with him because of what he does. As they spend more time together she realizes that she has strong feelings for him but can she overlook his work in order to be with him. Joey is a fine specimen of a man. He is an alpha male when he needs to be but knows how to be sweet and caring as well. It seems that he shows this side mostly to Sophie. He is also honest with her when he can be. While there are times he wants to tell her things he knows that he can’t. He soon comes to realize that the biggest job he has to do is convincing Sophie to take a change on their relationship. While Sophie and Joey are trying to figure out their relationship they have to deal with the “family” and things become even harder when the family comes under attack and Joey is put in a position he never expected to be in. The ending was quite surprising. I wasn’t expecting it but I think it was a good choice. I hope to read more books of this author’s in the future.

How to Lose a Duke in Ten Days by Kate McKinley

TBorges_TheBookClub_rating (4)

How To Lose a Duke in Ten Days is a delightful and sweet romance that captures readers interest from the first chapter. Love at first sight or maybe lust at first sight? One of those is what happened to Lucas Alexander, the ninth Duke of Arlington, the first time he was introduced to Miss Pippa Welby at a ball. Pippa’s beauty rendered Lucas completely speechless and is only response to her introduction was to turn around and leave without saying a word to her. While he didn’t say anything to her that didn’t mean that she was far from his thoughts. Months after meeting Pippa, Lucas has decided that he wants to marry her. He doesn’t see any reason why she would object so proceeds with plans for their engagement ball. When Lucas arrives at Pippa’s house and tells her that they will be married, he is unprepared for her answer. For whoever says No to a duke! Pippa Welby does and she puts up one heck of a fight!

I found Pippa to be a charming young woman that knows what she wants in a relationship and is willing to fight for that. I loved how she tried to rid herself of an unwanted husband it made for some hilarious moments in the story. While she has ten days to she realizes that maybe Lucas isn’t as bad as she originally thought. But what happens when the original reason Lucas decided to marry her comes to light…can she trust him and even love him still? Lucas is everything you could want in a Duke, handsome and a little arrogant. He is used to getting what he wants and he wants Pippa. When Pippa turns him down he knows that he has a fight on his hands. The more time he spends with her he comes to care for her and his original reason for marrying her is secondary to how much he loves her.

I really enjoyed this story and found myself smiling the entire time I was reading it. It was beautifully written with really great characters. I can’t wait to read more from this author.

Hell for Leather by Julie Ann Walker

Hell for Leather is the newest edition to the Black Knights series. It delivers a fast paced and engaging story that kept me reading from start to finish.

TBorges_TheBookClub_rating (4)
Delilah Fairchild needs help finding her Uncle who has recently gone missing. She knows the only people that can help her are the men (and women) behind Black Knights Inc. She has gotten to know them over the years as they are patrons of her bar and now that she knows what BKI really is, she knows that if anyone can help her it’s them. BKI sends Brian “Mac” McMillan into help. As Delilah and Mac search for her Uncle trouble finds them.
Hell for Leather brought together to people that I was waiting for but I just didn’t see the sparks that I thought I was going to (maybe I expected too much). In all the previous stories the attraction between Delilah and Mac was always there simmering at the surface. And now they have finally gotten their story but it they just didn’t do it for me.
I have always liked Delilah’s character in previous stories. She is a brassy, bold woman that goes after what she wants and she wants Mac. Now that they are spending a significant amount of time together she finally goes after him full throttle. While Mac is interested in her he keeps pushing her away because he doesn’t want to be hurt by a woman.

Cry me a river Mac! Mac just didn’t do it for me in this story. While he is an ex-FBI agent and a member of BKI he came across luke-warm to me in this story. There was just something missing with his character. I think it was the reason why he pushed Delilah away. When the reason for this was revealed, I couldn’t believe it. I really wanted to smack him for being a stupid male. Come on, you’re an Ex-FBI agent and member of a secret organization and you are afraid of a relationship. Grow a pair Mac! But like all good stories Mac comes to his senses (towards the end) and realizes that loosing Delilah would be the stupidest thing he has ever done.
Hell for Leather has its trademark humor and wit that the Black Knights are known for (love ozzie). Some of the members from previous books are the in this tory and its great catching up with them. The story is well written and fast paced. There was a lot of intrigue in regards to Delilah’s uncle and I really enjoyed it.

Hard Time by Cara McKenna

TBorges_TheBookClub_rating (3)

Hard Time is an interesting story that I was pleasantly surprised with. Annie Goodhouse is a librarian and part of her role is to conduct outreach at the local county jail. She is very nervous at first and is unsure how things will go. But she struggles through her fear and comes to enjoy the time there as she sees the changes in these men. Through her daily interactions she meets Eric Collier. While attracted to him she knows nothing can come of it. Eric is captivated by the new librarian. He soon starts to send her letters and they begin a secret romance. Eric’s situation changes and he is now facing parole.

Overall I thought it was a good book. Hard Time is a unique romance story as it has with one of the main characters being in jail for most of the story. When Eric is released he tells Annie that he will leave her alone because this was a surprise to both of them. Annie is undecided on how she feels about Eric. On one hand she is attracted to him and would like to have a relationship. But she has been hurt in the past so she is fearful of being with someone that has been convicted for a violent crime.  Eric and Annie happen to run into each other in the small town several times and because of this they realize that their attraction cannot be ignored. They soon start to explore their relationship but what will happen when Eric’s past threatens their future! Hard Time is a story about second changes and finding love in the least expected places.

Annie Goodhouse doesn’t need to be told to stay away from bad boys—an abusive ex taught her that lesson well. So when she steps into her new role as the outreach librarian for Cousins Correctional Facility, the last thing she’s worried about is misplacing of her good sense. Except after one look into the dark eyes of inmate 2267, all the logic in the world can’t seem to save her.Unlike some men in Cousins, Eric Collier won’t tell you he was wrongly convicted. He did his crime, and though it wasn’t pretty, he’d do it again if that’s what it took to keep his family safe. Loyalty and brute force are what he understands. That, and the way Annie sucks the air from his lungs every time she enters a room.He courts her in letters, their romance a reckless secret, an exchange of promises neither expects to keep—until suddenly Eric is facing parole, far sooner than he’d dare hope. On the outside waits a woman who fears their attraction as much as she thrives on it, and a past hell-bent on ruining his plans to become the man she deserves. An impossible choice—loyalty to the family he’d fight to the death for, or the trust of the woman he can’t imagine living without.
